Oreo Trivia

Jonny started this tradition last year. We were sitting down enjoying a package of oreos as a family and Jonny stumbled on a way of slowing down the number of cookies being consumed and ensuring even number of cookie distribution.

Jonny asks everyone a trivia question. Then we take turns asking him trivia questions trying to stump him. We have 4 categories: math, spelling, family history, and the scriptures (including Articles of Faith).

He and I try to find questions that are challenging for each family member. If they don't know the answer then we hint at it. Ultimately, we tell them the answer if they don't know it and give them their cookie. We sit at the table and go around taking turns. This results in everyone getting 4 cookies with milk.

Darren, since he's only 1 year old, currently gets asked about where his nose or his fingers are etc.

Josh, has speech problems, so we usually try to get him to say certain problematic sounds or count how many fingers are on his hands.

Britton has just started kindergarten and is learning how to read and do simple single digit math.

Nikki and Jay get more difficult spelling words and math problems. Jonny taught Jay about the Fibonacci sequence one time. Shortly thereafter in school, Jay's class was doing number patterns and predictability etc. The teacher recognized the Fibonacci sequence but couldn't think of the name. Jay was able to tell her the name. She was impressed and he was proud of himself.

As part of the Family History round, we test the kids on the names of all their cousins (there's about 50), names of grand parents and great grandparents, family members birthdays etc.

It's made many nice memories. Thus oreos have become a staple item at our house. Last night we had mint oreos. We also read the scriptures afterward because we have been neglecting it lately. Our best reading time seems to be around 8pm. I was amazed that Britton could read 50% of the words on his own. Typically, only those able to read participate and the younger ones either go to bed or roll around the floor while we're reading. Britton has sat with us in the past while we whispered the words of a short verse in his ear to repeat but usually we don't press him to stay. So this was his first official time sitting and reading with us. Last night was a special time that I hope is repeated often.
