This was our first year participating in 4H at the Yuma County Fair. Jay presented two poultry in front of the judge. He showed his Buff-laced Polish in the 'Best of Breed' judging and then used our docile Buff Orpington in the 'Showmanship' judging. He received a blue ribbon for showmanship and for best of breed. The orpington was also entered into the best of breed which we weren't expecting and received a red ribbon which surprised us since she was molting and not in very good condition. We only brought her for showmanship because she is so docile. Jay did very well and we're proud of him. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience and earned $150 at auction for his Polish chicken.

Nikki also enjoyed her 4H experience (more so after it was over). The judge was very strict so any ribbon won was well-deserved. Nikki received a blue ribbon for her rabbit in the Best of Breed circuit and a red ribbon for showmanship. She is very shy and we are therefore very proud of her for even speaking to the judge. She would occasionally swing her leg under the table and look over at me instead of the judge and spoke quietly when asked a question so I would make somewhat subtle gestures to stand up straight, look at the judge, and smile. The rabbit also peed on the table which then spread to Nikki's sleeves when she was maneuvering her rabbit into various positions for judging. It was an extra test of her nerves and she did well. She auctioned her rabbit (which was the merciful choice given our Yuma summers) and received $200 to put into her college fund. The rabbits are then recycled to be purchased by next year's 4H kids.
