"Prepare Every Needful Thing"

For 2013, we chose the scripture in D&C 88:119 as our annual theme: "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God; That your incomings may be in the name of the Lord; that your outgoings may be in the name of the Lord..."

What does it take to build such a house?! We're going to work hard to find out this year.

September

Most of our family activities in September were centered around helping Jay towards reaching his goal of earning all 20 Webelos activity badges before he turned 11 and advanced to Boy Scouts.

Jay Clark and Andrew Webb have been trying to earn as many badges as they can before turning 11 years old and leaving Cub Scouts behind.  One requirement lacking was to meet with a scientist in their work environment and learn about their profession.  We sought out some biologists who took us to the desert to find little critters in their habitats.  Kevin Young and Megan [?] are biologist/professors at AWC and April Young (Kevin's wife) is a biologist employed by the University of Arizona.  Her current assignment has been to catch 15 shovel-nosed snakes for a locomotion study.  They managed to find two during our time spent in the desert.

Biologist don't just stumble upon wildlife in the desert; they identify tracks and follow them right to the critter or it's hole.

These tracks were drawn as examples of tracks left by certain critters.

Dead lizard...a zebra tail to be precise.

Can you see the side-winder dozing in the middle of this bush?

Here is a live Zebra-tail lizard.  I wonder why they're called Zebra tails...hmmm?

Here's a very harmless Shovel-nosed Snake.

Horned lizard.

Isn't he cute!?

After sunset, we pulled out the black lights to hunt for scorpions.  Someone found a "Giant Harry"...that is one large scorpion bravely held by Ian Young, the biologists' son.  To hunt for scorpions, an adult with a flashlight led the way to spot any undesireable creatures while the rest of the group lingered about 5 feet behind with black lights to find the scorpions, pick them up with tongs, and deposit them in plastic buckets.  Wouldn't this make a cool night light?  We didn't bring any home with us.

Here's a sleeping baby sidewinder.
Jay had 6 badges to finish off in 30 days and he made it!  He earned his Arrow of Light and the Super 20 Bade at his last Pack Meeting.  Jay's birthday was on the 29th and his first Boy Scout campout was on September 30th.   So Jay and Jonny got to spend their birthday together camping.
