"Prepare Every Needful Thing"

For 2013, we chose the scripture in D&C 88:119 as our annual theme: "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God; That your incomings may be in the name of the Lord; that your outgoings may be in the name of the Lord..."

What does it take to build such a house?! We're going to work hard to find out this year.

Rhapsody of the Seas - Day 3

On Sunday, we arrived in Juneau, Alaska. It is the largest state capital by area but the smallest by population. Juneau can only be reached by plane or boat as there are no roads in or out. It was a beautiful sight. Steve and Faith deboarded early so that they could start their "scavenger hunt". As soon as we deboarded, we hunted around for a taxi to bring us to church. We were finally able to find a shuttle willing to take us for $5/each. We picked up Steve and Faith along the way. We found it amusing that they found a few other "Mormons" in front of the Red Dog Saloon so they were able to hitch a ride with us.

We attended the Juneau 2nd Ward. I will always remember how loud and friendly the church members conversed outside the chapel doors in the foyer. Then as we entered the chapel, all was silent and reverent. It taught me better by example than words ever could describe the difference that reverence makes in a meeting. It was the Sunday after Pioneer Day. The youth speaker told the story of Nephi obtaining the brass plates from Laban. Her topic was obedience. The adult speaker expounded on the same subject talking about how obedience to the commandments brings greater freedom. The High Council speaker talked about missionary work and being a pioneer of the gospel in your own family.

After the sacrament meeting, we met with a pre-arranged tour guide that took us whale watching in the nearby harbor with Captain Jack. It was a very successful day where we saw rarely-seen orca whales in addition to many humpback whales. We also saw a jellyfish, several bald eagles and a "sea bear" with a salmon in his mouth. It was really a sea lion but bear was the first word that came to mind. It was very furry! It was really cool seeing it jump out of the water shaking the salmon senseless in its mouth. We watched sea lions playing king of the beacon. One little sea lion kept trying to crawl onto the beacon while the larger ones kept pushing him off with their back flippers. He was finally succesful after several attempts.
