"Prepare Every Needful Thing"

For 2013, we chose the scripture in D&C 88:119 as our annual theme: "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God; That your incomings may be in the name of the Lord; that your outgoings may be in the name of the Lord..."

What does it take to build such a house?! We're going to work hard to find out this year.

Family Home Evening: Taking Care of our Planet

I had to write about our FHE last night. It was Britton's turn to give the lesson so Jonny helped him. We are still trying to do more with Jay in cub scouts so we decided to use Jay's bear book. We chose "Taking Care of our Planet". We started by singing "Whenever I Hear the Song of a Bird". Then Jonny whispered into Britton's ear what to read. Fortunately he whispered loud enough that we could hear what was supposed to be said.

First we discussed energy conversation. Everyone thought of something that uses energy. We talked about how we could conserve better. We're conserving pretty well with the exception of leaving lights on. So we formed a family train and chugged through each room turning lights on as we entered and off as we left.

Next we discussed water conservation. Again, everyone thought of something that uses water and how we can conserve better. Showers should be shorter. Eventually we'll train Darren and Josn not to drain the drinking water jug into the catch tray. Our sprinklers are on timers. We praised the kids for trying to conserve toilet water by only flushing once a month but decided for health reasons that we should flush it each time instead.

Finally, we discussed material conservation. We opted to start recycling our newspapers. The recycling plant is not far down Arizona Avenue. We arranged a box in a hidden but close location that we think Darren and Josh will not notice and therefore not empty daily.

The most wasted material in our house is toilet paper. Britton uses 1/2 a roll per visit. Jonny demonstrated (in a way that only he can) how to count toilet paper squares, fold them, and use them. We advised that 3 seemed an appropriate number for Britton. We advised Jay and Nikki to be 'judicious' in their number selection.

We closed with a prayer then ate Biscotti with milk.

That's a good topic. I'm trying to imagine Jonny demonstrating how much toilet paper to use.
